Algeria Sends Fighter Jets To Niger After Unrest

Algeria has deployed four fighter jets to Niger following a mutiny by soldiers in the capital, Niamey, Algeria’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday. Two patrols involving four Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft landed at Niamey airport alongside an aerial refuelling aircraft. The deployment was carried out at the request of Nigerien authorities.

Algeria’s Defence Ministry said the aircraft were sent to support Niger’s army in confronting what it described as an attempt to destabilise the country.

The mission was ordered by Algerian Army Chief of Staff Said Chengriha under instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as part of efforts to strengthen military and strategic cooperation between the two countries. Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine received the Algerian mission and expressed his appreciation for the support.

The unrest involved attacks around Diori Hamani International Airport, Air Base 101, and other strategic sites in Niamey.

Niger’s Defence Minister said loyal security forces had brought the situation under control, although the motive of the mutineers remained unclear.

Algeria said the deployment reaffirmed its commitment to supporting security and stability in the region and helping Niger overcome what it described as a sensitive period.
