Benin Recruits Troops Amid Security Tension

The government of Benin has announced the recruitment of 5,000 additional military personnel

The government of Benin has announced the recruitment of 5,000 additional military personnel as part of efforts to strengthen security in the country’s northern regions.

Officials said the recruits would support ongoing operations against armed groups that have carried out attacks near Benin’s borders with Burkina Faso and Niger.

The Ministry of Defence said the recruitment drive forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the military’s presence in vulnerable areas and improve rapid response capabilities.

Benin has experienced a rise in security incidents in recent years, particularly in the north, where armed groups operating in the Sahel have expanded their activities.

Authorities said the newly recruited personnel would undergo specialised training before being deployed to operational zones.

The government has also invested in surveillance equipment, military infrastructure and regional security cooperation programmes aimed at tackling cross-border threats.

President Patrice Talon has repeatedly pledged to strengthen national security and protect communities affected by growing instability in parts of West Africa.
