The World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed for additional funding support towards the efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the appeal during a visit to the country, where he met government officials, health workers and community leaders involved in the response.
Tedros said the outbreak requires sustained financial and logistical support to strengthen surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing and treatment services in affected areas.
Health officials have expressed concern that the virus may have spread undetected for some time before the outbreak was confirmed, making containment efforts more challenging.
The WHO chief also urged communities to cooperate with health officials, stressing that public trust remains critical to stopping the spread of the disease.
Congolese health workers have continued vaccination campaigns and public awareness programmes while monitoring people who may have come into contact with confirmed cases.
International health agencies say early intervention and adequate funding will be cardinal to preventing further spread.
