Cape Verde Continues Impressive World Cup Run

Capo Verde, debutants at the 2026 World Cup impressive play continued with the game against Uruguay. The African side, which came to the World Cup as underdogs, have proved bookmakers with a second draw and 2 goals against the South American side and two timers former champions.

After their first match against Spain, which, against expectations, ended in a goalless draw, the Cape Verdians came into their second game a lot more comfortable and confident. Cape Verde first goal came  in the match, and in a FIFA World Cup came in the 21st minute as Kevin Pina’s long-range free-kick went the middle of the wall.

Uruguay came on levels at the 44th minute, as Maxi Araujo dived low to nod in the equalizer. The Uruguayan took the lead in the added time before the break. The Cape Verdeans, pulled an equalizer in the 66th minute as Helio Varela capitalized on a defense error to keep his team in contention for a place in the last 32.

The Uruguayans and Cape Verde are 2nd and 3rd in their group H. Both sides are level on points and stand a chance to advance to the next round. Group leaders defeated Saudi Arabia 4-0 to lead the group with 4 points after they were stunned by Cape Verde in the opening match with a goalless draw.

The Africans will hope to record their first win against the bottom placed Saudi Arabia who would hope to redeem their image after being battered by Spain. While the Spaniards will hope to consolidate their group standing with a win against Uruguay. The South Americans, on the other hand, would want to improve their chances to qualify for the round of 32.
