Egypt Records First World Cup Win
The Pharaohs of Egypt have secured the first ever FIFA World Cup win despite playing in the competition multiple times. The Egyptians were winless in the previous three World Cup participation, broke the jinx with an impressive 3-1 over New Zealand.
The New Zealanders got the first goal of the night as Finn Surman gave the All Whites a goal in the 15th minute with a powerful header. Though the Pharaohs continued to search for an equalizer, that didn’t come until the 58th minute when Mustafa Zico headed past the New Zealand goalkeeper.
Muhammed Salah o the 67th minute was on hand to deliver a second goal to put the Arab Africans on the lead. The icing on the cake came for the Hosam Hassan side with an 82 minute strike from Trezeguet.
“It’s disappointing. We were so good in the first half. We dominated possession and created a lot of chances. We came out in the second half and I thought we were okay but we didn’t quite get to the pace of the game. Egypt upped the tempo and we couldn’t replicate what we were doing so well in the first half. Ultimately, that hurt us. We’re still one game away from making history. We know we have to beat Belgium now.” Darren Bazeley, New Zealand coach
“Getting the first win for our country, it’s just something…..I don’t know, I don’t have the words. I’m speechless, you know, it’s truly something great. We’re so happy to have achieved this. It’s the first one for Egypt in our history and, Inshallah, it’s not the last one.” Mostafa Shobeir, Egypt goalkeeper
