Ebola Outbreak Triggers Emergency Response in DRC, Uganda

A fresh Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has sparked an international emergency response after health authorities confirmed a rapid rise in infections and deaths linked to the virus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following reports that the virus had spread beyond the initial outbreak zone in Ituri province of the Republic.

Health officials say more than 100 people have died since the outbreak began, while hundreds of suspected cases are currently under observation. Authorities in neighbouring Uganda have also confirmed several related infections near border communities, raising fears of regional transmission.

According to WHO officials, the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine. Medical experts say this could complicate efforts to contain the spread of the disease compared to previous Ebola outbreaks in West and Central Africa.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected communities, while isolation centres and screening units have been set up in border regions. Health workers are also carrying out contact tracing and public awareness campaigns to reduce transmission.

However, aid agencies warn that insecurity in eastern Congo remains a major challenge for health officials trying to reach remote communities. Armed conflict and displacement in the region have reportedly slowed response operations and increased the risk of further spread.

Several African countries, including Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda, have increased health screening measures at airports and border crossings as part of efforts to prevent cross-border infections.

The WHO has appealed for increased international support and funding, warning that delayed intervention could worsen the humanitarian situation in the region.
