Rwanda has closed a major border crossing with the Democratic Republic of Congo following growing fears over the spread of Ebola in the region.

The decision affects movement between the city of Goma in eastern Congo and Gisenyi in Rwanda, one of the busiest border routes in East Africa used daily by traders, workers and travellers.

Rwandan authorities said the temporary closure forms part of quick health measures introduced after neighbouring DR Congo confirmed a fresh Ebola outbreak linked to the deadly Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

Health officials have intensified screening at airports and border posts across the country, while medical teams have been deployed to monitor for potential cases and strengthen preparedness.

The Ministry of Health said the measures are aimed at preventing cross-border transmission and protecting public health, especially in high-traffic border communities.

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has already killed more than 100 people, according to health authorities, with additional suspected infections under observation.

Regional health experts warn that the movement of traders and displaced persons across porous borders could increase the risk of wider transmission if containment measures are not initiated on time.

Businesses and transport operators around the Rwanda-Congo border have expressed concern over the economic impact of the closure, as cross-border trade remains a major source of income for thousands of residents.

The World Health Organisation has urged neighbouring countries to strengthen surveillance systems, improve testing capacity and coordinate regional response efforts to prevent the outbreak from escalating further.
