IMF Awaits Kenya Response on Governance Review
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says it has shared a draft governance diagnostic assessment with the Kenyan government and is awaiting its response as discussions continue on a possible new lending programme.
The assessment identifies governance weaknesses and corruption risks that could affect public institutions and economic management. The IMF said feedback from the Kenyan authorities would help move negotiations on a new fund-supported programme forward.
According to the Fund, the governance assessment will only be published with the consent of the Kenyan government.
The IMF also said it is consulting with Kenya on the timing of its next Article IV consultation, the Fund’s regular review of a member country’s economic performance, fiscal policies and financial stability.
Kenya’s previous IMF-supported programme ended before completion after the final review was discontinued earlier in 2025. Both sides are now discussing the framework for future cooperation.
The East African nation is seeking continued engagement with the IMF as it works to ease fiscal pressures, strengthen public finances and implement economic reforms. The IMF has not yet indicated when a new lending programme could be agreed.
