Nigeria’s First Lady urges musicians to help the poor
Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, 65, served as a senator from 2011 to 2023.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged the country’s leading musicians, Burna Boy, Davido and Asake, to allocate part of their wealth toward helping the poor.
She appealed on Saturday, July 11, at the launch of a community food bank programme in Lokoja, Kogi State.
“I think it is high time we started helping those who need help in the country,” she said. “The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido… We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money, not just… good cars are good, a Maybach is good, a Rolls-Royce is good, but still, you can still help.”
The first lady’s remarks went viral, with some online users backing her message while others said entertainers should choose how to spend their money.
Burna Boy, Davido and Asake are among Nigeria’s most successful musicians, with estimated net worths in the millions of dollars. The figures have not been independently verified.
Records show the three musicians have taken part in various charity programmes. Burna Boy has provided food donations to families in Rivers State, Davido has supported orphanages across the country, and Asake has offered individual help to various Nigerians.
Burna Boy has said he helps people who “really need it, and most of them are not on the internet.”
