South African police have arrested a British-Zimbabwean man wanted for the murder of his wife and two young daughters in England, and extradition proceedings are underway.

Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, 45, appeared in a Johannesburg court on Monday facing three murder charges authorised by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service. He also faces a charge of illegal firearm possession in South Africa.

The bodies of Tshuma’s wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, and their daughters Natalie, 15, and Nala, 5, were found at their home in Great Denham, near Bedford, on July 6. Bedfordshire Police said post-mortem examinations found they died of blunt force trauma.

Tshuma arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on July 5, the day before the bodies were discovered. He was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg, on July 10, hours after an Interpol Red Notice was issued.

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said Tshuma was not flagged upon entry because British authorities had not yet issued the alert. She confirmed he will be extradited once all legal documentation is completed.

South African police said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation. Tshuma remains in custody.

Extradition hearings are expected within 40 days.
