Foreign ministers from Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia met in Cairo on Sunday to discuss regional developments and efforts to support the implementation of a US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed earlier this week.

The talks came as high-level negotiations between Washington and Tehran began in Switzerland following the signing of a ceasefire deal. Those negotiations were originally scheduled for Friday but were postponed. Tehran said the delay was due to Israel’s ongoing attacks on Lebanon, which it said violated the agreement.

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi attended the meeting and called for intensified coordination among the four countries. He stressed the need to ensure the success of the negotiations.

The meeting was the fourth between the quartet and the first since the agreement was concluded. The deal aims to end the conflict that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

The agreement provides for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the launch of a 60-day negotiation period on broader issues, including Tehran’s nuclear programme.
