Somalia President Vows to Protect National Stability

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has pledged to protect the country’s stability, saying political disagreements should be addressed through dialogue and constitutional processes.

Mohamud spoke at a farewell ceremony for former parliament speaker Aden Mohamed Nur, who was recently elected president of South West State.

The president said Somalia had made gains after years of conflict and would not be allowed to return to instability.

He said the federal government remained committed to strengthening democratic institutions and supporting peaceful political participation.

Mohamud also defended ongoing electoral reforms, saying political leadership should be decided through democratic processes rather than informal arrangements.

He encouraged citizens to take part peacefully in politics and support efforts to build accountable institutions.

The remarks came as Somalia continues political and security reforms while facing attacks from the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Reuters reported earlier in June that government troops and opposition-linked militias exchanged fire in Mogadishu ahead of anti-government protests.

Former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed accused government forces of targeting his residence. The government has not accepted the allegation.

Mohamud urged citizens to protect public infrastructure and support national development efforts.

It was not immediately clear whether opposition groups had responded to the president’s latest remarks.
