Sudan Seeks Turkish Support Amid Prolonged War

Sudan has called for stronger Turkish engagement in efforts to draw international attention to the country’s civil war.

Amgad Fareid Eltayeb, political and foreign affairs adviser to the chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, made the call in an interview with Anadolu.

Eltayeb said Türkiye was well placed to raise the conflict on the international agenda because of its relations with NATO countries and the Muslim world.

He said Sudan expected further engagement from Türkiye, while noting what he described as historical ties between the two countries.

The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023 and has entered its fourth year.

Eltayeb called for the RSF to be designated a terrorist organisation, saying the conflict had become a threat to Sudan’s sovereignty and stability.

He also said such a designation could limit the ability of actors supporting the RSF to prolong the war.

The conflict has displaced millions of people and created what aid agencies have described as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Sudanese authorities have said preserving state institutions is important for stability in Sudan and surrounding regions.

Türkiye has maintained diplomatic engagement with Sudan and has expressed support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It was not immediately clear what additional steps Türkiye may take in response to Sudan’s appeal.
