Sudan Signs UN80 Charter at UN

Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter by signing the UN80 Charter at the UN Headquarters in New York as the organisation marks its 80th anniversary.

The commemorative document was signed by Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, during a ceremony organised by the UN General Assembly. The initiative forms part of activities marking 80 years since the adoption of the UN Charter.

The UN80 campaign is being held under the theme, “Better Together, One Charter, One Future,” and seeks to encourage member states to renew their commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Idris said Sudan remains committed to the values of state sovereignty, international peace and security, and stronger multilateral cooperation. He described the Charter as an important foundation for addressing global challenges and promoting stability.

The signed document will be displayed during a commemorative event on June 26 alongside those of other UN member states participating in the initiative.

The ceremony is part of broader efforts by the United Nations to reinforce multilateral cooperation as member states reflect on the organisation’s founding principles. The initiative does not create new legal obligations for participating countries.
