Ugandan Military Chief Announces 2031 Presidential Bid

The military chief of Uganda, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans to run for president in the 2031 elections in the country.

Kainerugaba, 52, made the announcement in a series of posts on X on Tuesday, saying he would seek “the highest office in the land” and expected to win with his father’s support. He also claimed he could secure 90% of the vote.

Kainerugaba has long been viewed as a possible successor to Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986. He leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political pressure group that has campaigned on issues including nationalism and development.

The military chief had previously announced plans to contest the 2026 presidential election but later withdrew from the race.

Museveni, 81, secured a seventh term after Uganda’s January 2026 elections. He has not said whether he intends to seek another term in 2031.

Government spokesman Alan Kasujja told Reuters that Museveni and his ruling National Resistance Movement party would decide on his future candidacy when the time comes.

Kainerugaba’s announcement comes amid pressure on Uganda’s opposition. Opposition leader Bobi Wine left the country earlier this year, citing concerns for his safety, while veteran opposition politician Kizza Besigye has been imprisoned since 2024 and faces a treason trial.
