Tanzania Vice President Nchimbi Resigns

The Vice President of Tanzania, Emmanuel Nchimbi, has resigned from office, saying he wanted to respect President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s wishes.

Nchimbi announced his resignation on Tuesday in a message shared on his Instagram account, saying he had decided to retire from politics and public service.

His resignation will take effect on September 4, 2026.

Nchimbi said he had promised Hassan in August 2025 that he would serve her and Tanzania with integrity and to the best of his ability. He added that he had also pledged to resign if the president wanted a different person to serve as vice president.

“I am convinced beyond doubt that the president desires change,” Nchimbi said in the message.

There was no immediate official reaction from the presidency at the time of his announcement.

Nchimbi thanked Tanzanians for their cooperation during his time in public service and said he would continue to serve as a citizen.

Hassan became president in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli. Her early administration was widely viewed as more open to opposition parties and the media than her predecessor’s government.

The resignation comes amid heightened political attention in Tanzania following the country’s 2025 elections and continuing legal proceedings against opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing a treason trial.
