Algeria’s Energy Strategy: Balancing Hydrocarbons and the Green Transition./Other

Algeria has launched a major solar energy project in the Sahara Desert as part of efforts to expand renewable energy production and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The project, announced by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, includes the construction of several large-scale solar power stations across the southern parts of the country.

Government officials said the initiative aimed to increase electricity supply, support industrial growth, and position Algeria as a regional energy exporter.

Authorities also said the project would help reduce carbon emissions and support the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.

Construction work has already begun in selected desert locations where sunlight levels are considered among the highest in the world.

Energy experts said Algeria’s vast desert landscape gives the country significant potential to become one of Africa’s leading producers of solar energy.

The government stated that part of the electricity generated from the project could eventually be exported to European markets through existing energy partnerships.

Several international energy firms are expected to participate in the project through technical and investment partnerships.
