Morocco expands rail network for 2030 World Cup

Morocco has announced plans to expand its high-speed rail network as part of major infrastructure preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal.

The Moroccan government said the railway expansion would improve transportation between major cities and support the movement of millions of visitors expected during the tournament. New rail connections will link additional cities to the existing Al Boraq high-speed train service, which currently operates between Tangier and Casablanca.

The Al Boraq train was launched in 2018 as Africa’s first high-speed railway. It reduced travel time between Tangier and Casablanca from nearly five hours to just over two hours.

Authorities said the new project would also include upgrades to railway stations, urban transport systems and surrounding infrastructure. The government has not yet disclosed the estimated cost or timeline for the expansion.

Morocco is the second African country to host the World Cup after South Africa in 2010. The tournament is expected to bring millions of visitors to the three host countries.

Government officials described the railway expansion as part of broader economic and tourism development plans to create jobs and improve regional connectivity. The country has been investing heavily in transport infrastructure ahead of the World Cup, including road expansions and airport upgrades.

Construction will continue over the next several years as preparations intensify for the tournament. The first matches of the 2030 World Cup are scheduled for June 2030.
