 Ghana Renews UN Council Push

President John Mahama has renewed calls for permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council, saying the continent deserves a stronger voice in global decision-making matters.

Mahama appealed during a policy address visit in London, where he argued that the current structure of the Security Council no longer reflects modern geopolitical realities. He said Africa’s population, economic contribution and growing role in international affairs justify greater representation within the United Nations system.

The Ghanaian leader reemphasised support for the African Union’s Common African Position, which advocates permanent seats for Africa on the Security Council with the same rights and privileges enjoyed by existing permanent members.

Calls for reform of the Security Council have gained momentum in recent years, with African leaders arguing that the continent remains underrepresented despite accounting for more than a quarter of the UN’s membership. The issue has featured prominently at African Union summits and international diplomatic forums.

Mahama said the reform efforts should focus on ensuring that global institutions reflect current realities rather than arrangements established after the Second World War.

The Security Council currently consists of five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

No agreement has been reached among UN member states on a timeline for implementing reforms to the council’s structure.
